Iran’s special envoy to Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, called on the Taliban to cooperate in securing the border between the two countries during a meeting with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Tehran on Sunday.

Kazemi Qomi said that the two sides also discussed expanding trade cooperation and supporting regional initiatives to promote peace and stability in Afghanistan.

“We stressed the importance of security and stability in Afghanistan,” Kazemi Qomi wrote on the social media platform Twitter. “We also discussed the need for closer cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan in the fields of trade, economy, and judicial assistance.”

Kazemi Qomi said that the two sides also discussed the concerns of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries, including Iran.

“We discussed the support for regional initiatives and the formation of a regional contact group,” he said. “This group can play a role in facilitating relations between the Taliban and the countries of the region and addressing the legitimate concerns and demands of the countries surrounding Afghanistan.”

The meeting comes as Iran is concerned about the potential for terrorist groups to infiltrate from Afghanistan into Iran.
