Silence of women’s voices in Afghan media
On International Women’s Day, the Organization for the Support of Afghan Journalists announced that women’s voices have been silenced in more than half of the country. This organization has reported that there are no female journalists or media workers in 19 provinces of Afghanistan. After the Taliban came to power, the number of active television channels has decreased from 248 to 68, radios from 438 to 211, and newspapers from 91 to only 13. Statistics show that less than 600 female journalists are currently working in Afghanistan and the domestic media faces many restrictions and censorship. In the past two and a half years, there have been numerous reports of media closures, media attacks, arrests, and beatings of journalists and media workers. The Organization for the Protection of Afghan Journalists has announced that the Taliban threaten and imprison journalists and media workers with the smallest excuses.
