America’s strategic failure with the fall of the former government of Afghanistan
General Frank Kenneth McKenzie, the former head of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), announced in a hearing of the US House of Representatives that US government officials are responsible for the disastrous situation in Afghanistan, not the US military.
He stated that the chaotic situation in Afghanistan and the killing of American soldiers at the Kabul airport were caused by the “wrong” policies of the United States government.
McKenzie stated that in 2020, various options were offered to the US government for a complete withdrawal from Afghanistan, but only the presence of 2,500 American soldiers was chosen to protect the embassy employees in Kabul.
He also stated that the order was given to withdraw American forces from Afghanistan by May 2021.Referring to the death of more than two thousand American soldiers during the two decades of war in Afghanistan, Mackenzie declared that the events that occurred in August 2021 were a disaster.
He believes that more pressure from the Taliban led to the collapse of the previous Afghan government.
