The influence of the activities of the Khorasan branch of ISIS on the Taliban government
Andrew Watkins, an analyst from the American Institute of Peace, in examining the impact of Moscow’s attack on the Taliban government, pays attention to the increase in ISIS attacks in Khorasan in the region and questions the Taliban’s claims about guaranteeing stability and controlling Afghanistan’s security challenges.
He has stated that the increase in the activities of the Khorasan ISIS branch will lead to destructive effects on the Taliban government.
In his statement, which was published on the website of the American Institute of Peace, Mr. Watkins stated:
“The more the terrorist activities of ISIS in Khorasan increase, the more countries will probably doubt the effectiveness of the Taliban in controlling Afghanistan’s security challenges.
“He has stated that the Taliban has been able to reduce the ability of ISIS activities inside Afghanistan and this group has also stopped its efforts to rebel against the Taliban. However, according to him, ISIS in Khorasan has shown “compatibility” with the actions of the Taliban and by changing its approach, it has turned to attacks on a smaller scale but with greater sensitivity.
He has also emphasized that the increase in threats from ISIS in Khorasan may cause countries to consider the Taliban as an effective ally in the fight against terrorism and seek cooperation with this group.
In conclusion, Watkins has stated that although there are some concerns about the effectiveness of the Taliban as an effective partner in the fight against terrorism, many countries are still not looking for a better alternative.
