Iran and EU Discuss Third Doha Meeting on Afghanistan

ایران و اتحادیه اروپا در مورد سومین نشست دوحه در مورد افغانستان گفتگو کردند

The Iranian Embassy in Kabul reports that Gholam Reza Najari, the deputy of the embassy, and Thomas Nicholson, the European Union’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, met and discussed the third Doha meeting.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) today (Sunday, June 4), the embassy stated that the two sides also discussed and exchanged views on regional and international cooperation with Afghanistan. The embassy did not provide further details about the meeting.

Thomas Nicholson, who recently traveled to Kabul, also discussed the third Doha meeting with the Taliban’s acting foreign minister. The third meeting of special representatives of countries on Afghanistan’s situation, hosted by the United Nations Secretary-General, is scheduled to take place on July 1-2 in Doha, Qatar.

Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, invited the Taliban to participate in the meeting during her visit to Kabul. The Taliban are demanding “meaningful participation” in the meeting and say that the UN must also reach an agreement with the group regarding the composition of the participants.

It remains unclear which other Afghan political groups and factions, apart from the Taliban, have been invited to participate in the third Doha meeting.
