Taliban in Turmoil: Internal Rifts Deepen Among Top Leaders

In a recent development highlighting deep fissures within the Taliban leadership, informed sources report growing tensions between the group’s leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, and two of its senior ministers. Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Interior Minister, and Mullah Yaqoob, the Defense Minister, are reportedly displeased with Akhundzada’s interference in their ministerial affairs.

Sources indicate that both ministers have directly confronted Hibatullah about these disagreements, but the Taliban leader has dismissed their concerns. Akhundzada even went as far as to tell Haqqani and Mullah Yaqoob that they played minimal roles in the Taliban’s “jihad” against the former Afghan government.

In response to these criticisms, supporters of Haqqani and Yaqoob have taken to social media, widely sharing images and videos of their “jihadi” activities. A source from the Taliban’s Interior Ministry stated that footage and images of Sirajuddin Haqqani, showing him before attacks or meeting with suicide bombers, have been circulated online.

These developments come as an old video recently resurfaced on Afghan social media, showing Sirajuddin Haqqani and his brother bidding farewell to a teenage suicide bomber. Many users accuse the Haqqani network of being responsible for the deaths of thousands of Afghans through suicide attacks.

Despite these disagreements, Haqqani, Yaqoob, and other senior Taliban officials continue to emphasize their complete obedience to the group’s leader. These events demonstrate that despite a united front, internal tensions among the Taliban leadership are escalating.
