Iran Warns Russia: Zangezur Corridor Threatens Regional Stability

Iran issued a stern warning to its key ally Russia regarding its support for Azerbaijan’s bid to build the Zangezur Corridor. Iranian Foreign Minister Syed Abbas Araghchi took to social media, declaring, “Regional peace and stability is a pillar of our national security. Any threat from North, South, East, or West to territorial integrity of our neighbours or redrawing of boundaries is totally unacceptable and a red line for Iran.”

The statement came in response to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s recent comments in Baku, where he accused Armenia of sabotaging the Russian-brokered agreement to open the corridor. The proposed Zangezur Corridor would link Azerbaijan’s western regions to its Nakhchivan exclave along the Armenia-Iran border, potentially limiting Iran’s access to Armenia and Europe.

Iran has consistently opposed the corridor project, viewing it as a threat to its geopolitical interests in the region. The Iranian government summoned Russian Ambassador Alexey Dedov to express its displeasure, emphasizing that it does not want conflict encouraged by Moscow on its borders.

This diplomatic tension comes at a crucial time, as Russia and Iran are set to sign a new strategic cooperation agreement. However, the recent disagreement over the Zangezur Corridor has highlighted the complexities in their relationship and the delicate balance of power in the South Caucasus region.
