Taliban’s Ban on Girls’ Education: A Three-Year Crisis
The Human Rights Watch has raised alarm over the international community’s inadequate response to the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan. Three years after the Taliban prohibited girls above sixth grade from attending school, the organization warns of long-term damage to the country’s educational system.
According to the Human Rights Watch, while the issue of Afghan girls’ secondary education has sparked global discussions, governments and international bodies have not given it sufficient priority. The ban is expected to institutionalize gender inequality in Afghanistan’s education system, negatively impacting various aspects of Afghan life.
The rights group predicts that if the ban continues, Afghanistan will face a severe shortage of female doctors, nurses, teachers, and educated women in the coming years. They urge the Taliban to end this prohibition, which has deprived at least 1.4 million girls of their right to education since its implementation three years ago.
