Taliban in Ghor: “Widows Better Die Than Work Outside”

The Taliban group has imposed severe restrictions on women in the Lal wa Sarjangal district. According to local sources, on Saturday, October 6, Taliban’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice officials announced after congregational prayers that no woman is allowed to work outside the home.

These restrictions also include prohibiting women from entering the marketplace without a male guardian. When local elders expressed concern about widows and unsupported women, the Taliban official’s disturbing response was that “it’s better for them to die” than work outside.

Reports indicate that Taliban officers harass people daily, including forcibly closing shops during prayer times and imposing a 5,000 Afghani fine for disobeying orders. Young men are also harassed for shaving their beards and sometimes labeled as “infidels.”

These actions align with the Taliban’s new law on the propagation of virtue and prevention of vice, which mandates full coverage for women and prohibits women’s voices outside the home. Taliban officials emphasize strict enforcement of this law.

These restrictions have raised serious concerns about human rights and fundamental freedoms in Afghanistan.
