Indigenous Australian Senator to King Charles III: “You are not our king!”

During King Charles III’s official visit to Australia, an Indigenous senator protested the British monarch’s presence by shouting, “You are not our king!” The incident occurred on Monday at the Australian Parliament in Canberra

Lidia Thorpe, an independent senator from Victoria, rushed towards the stage after King Charles finished his speech in the Great Hall of Parliament, exclaiming, “You are not our king. You are not our sovereign. You committed genocide against our people.”

This protest drew global attention to the sensitive issue of the British monarch’s role as Australia’s head of state. While some Australians, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, want to remove the British monarchy and turn the country into a full republic, such a change would require a referendum.

Despite this incident, Keir Starmer, the leader of the British Labour Party, praised King Charles’ performance, saying he is doing a “fantastic job,” particularly in light of the “health challenges” he faces.

This event once again highlighted the debates surrounding the role of the British monarchy in Australia and the rights of the country’s Indigenous people. However, it appears that currently, the majority of Australians are not inclined to hold a referendum to change the country’s political system.
