The Guardian reported that the Islamic Republic is considering releasing hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees at Iran’s western borders and directing them toward Iraq and Turkey.
This move is part of a more aggressive Tehran strategy following the bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites and the implementation of the snapback mechanism.
Turkey serves as one of the main routes for Afghan refugees seeking entry into Europe. The threat to send refugees westward is reminiscent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s warning that he would send millions of Syrian refugees toward Europe.
The snapback mechanism has led to the return of UN sanctions against Iran.
These sanctions include financial, banking, arms, and transportation restrictions that were previously lifted under the JCPOA framework.
