The Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education announced that university professors and officials below grade four are no longer allowed to use smartphones. This decision was made on Saturday, October 3rd, by the ministry’s leadership council.
The Taliban group stated in the released document that smartphone usage causes increased distractions and work complications. Professors and officials above grade three have also been requested to reduce their smartphone usage.
This ban is not unprecedented, as Hibatullah Akhundzada had previously asked clerics to find a “Sharia-compliant way” to prohibit smartphones. This decision is reportedly aimed at preventing criticism and propaganda against the Taliban and stopping what they consider “corrupt” content.
