Waheed Omer, ex-chief of staff to Hamid Karzai, has revealed that Dr. Abdullah Abdullah was the true winner of Afghanistan’s 2014 presidential election.
According to Omer, the intervention of then-US Secretary of State John Kerry altered the outcome, leading to the formation of the National Unity Government.
Omer stressed that foreign political interference has repeatedly played a decisive role in the nation’s election results.
The 2014 election was among the most controversial in Afghan history, with Abdullah leading the first round and later calling the runoff a case of “massive fraud” in favor of Ashraf Ghani.
The political deadlock nearly resulted in two parallel governments until a US-brokered deal resolved the crisis.
That deal made Ashraf Ghani President and Abdullah Chief Executive—a role not outlined in the constitution and created solely to end the crisis.
Many critics argue this compromise weakened Afghanistan’s political structure and led to further security, economic, and political challenges.
