Former MP and historian Mohiuddin Mehdi sparked debate by stating he does not identify as “Afghan” while affirming his deep love for the country.
He argued that the term “Intra-Afghan Dialogue” is flawed and that the real solution to the nation’s structural crisis lies in an “Inter-Ethnic Dialogue” where all groups are equally represented.
Mehdi claimed that the political rights of Tajiks and other ethnic groups have been systematically ignored in Afghanistan’s power structures. He identified ethnic inequality, identity exclusion, and the unfair distribution of power as the root causes of the country’s persistent instability and conflict.
The prominent politician emphasized that lasting peace can only be achieved by acknowledging ethnic realities and ensuring justice for all communities. His comments touch upon the sensitive and ongoing debate regarding national identity and political inclusion that continues to shape Afghanistan’s future.
