The US Department of Justice announced that a federal jury convicted Afghan citizen Mohammad Sharifullah for providing material support to ISIS-K. His charges are connected to multiple incidents, including the tragic 2021 suicide bombing at Kabul airport. He could face up to twenty years in federal prison.
Prosecutors stated that Sharifullah conducted surveillance on routes and security checkpoints prior to the August attack. That devastating explosion killed thirteen American troops and nearly 160 Afghan civilians during the massive international evacuation operations.
Although he was convicted in Virginia, the jury could not conclude that his specific actions directly caused the fatalities, which would have meant a life sentence. Defense attorneys maintained there was no direct evidence, and the court has yet to schedule a sentencing date.
