Amnesty International has stated that the new decree on family law by the Taliban government practically legitimizes child marriage. This new legislation grants male family members extensive authority to arrange marriages for minors, severely limiting the fundamental rights and independence of women and girls.

According to the legal review, the decree makes it extremely difficult for young women to legally challenge forced marriages. Amnesty International warns that a young girl's silence upon reaching puberty is interpreted as consent for marriage, which significantly increases the risk of forced and arranged unions.

The organization emphasized that this new law contradicts international human rights standards and entirely strips women of their independence. Previously, numerous human rights defenders and the United Nations have strongly condemned the widespread restrictions imposed by the Taliban government on Afghan women and young girls.
