Human Rights Watch researcher Fereshteh Abbasi wrote in The Hill that condemning the Taliban while simultaneously deporting migrants to territory under their control is the height of hypocrisy. She stressed that no one should be returned to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.
Abbasi pointed to efforts by European countries and the United States to cooperate with the Taliban on migrant deportations. She also noted that around 1,100 Afghan refugees stranded in Qatar are being pressured to either return to Afghanistan or be transferred to an undisclosed location.
The researcher warned that migration deals relieve pressure on the Taliban to be held accountable for ongoing human rights abuses. She cited the testimony of a former security officer who was tortured after being forcibly returned to Afghanistan.
