Taliban authorities have dismissed the last remaining Shia professors from the Faculty of Sharia at Bamyan University, continuing their pattern of removing Shia academics from Afghan universities. Ibrahim Zaki, a professor in the Department of Jurisprudence and Law, and Khalil Kuhi, a professor in the Department of Islamic Studies, were both removed after years of service.
Their dismissal letters were signed by the Taliban's Ministry of Higher Education on July 30 and delivered to them on August 9. The official reason cited was "creating opportunities for youth," yet Zaki is 50 years old and Kuhi is 41 — both well below Afghanistan's retirement age of 65.
Sources confirm that Taliban-approved madrassa graduates have been hired to replace them. With their removal, no Shia professors remain in the Faculty of Sharia at Bamyan University. The Taliban have not commented on the dismissals.
