Meta reached an $18 billion settlement with dozens of US states over allegations that Instagram and Facebook were designed to be addictive for children. The deal was struck during the second week of a major federal trial in Oakland, California.

Under the agreement, which involves 48 states, Meta must implement new protective measures for child and teen users. CEO Mark Zuckerberg had been expected to testify at the trial.

New Mexico did not join the settlement, having already won a separate case that resulted in Meta being ordered to pay over $940 million. Florida also declined, with its attorney general stating the terms were not tough enough on Meta.
