Former President Donald Trump has once again verbally attacked a journalist, this time targeting NBC News correspondent Monica Alba after she questioned his support for a controversial campaign advertisement.
The ad was released by Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican nominee for governor of Ohio. It features the estranged mother of his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton. In the ad, Acton's mother states she does not trust her daughter and claims she "lies about her past."
When Monica Alba asked Trump if he supported the ad, he snapped back, "You’re a horrible little reporter, aren’t you?" The exchange highlighted Trump's long-standing adversarial relationship with members of the press.
The controversy surrounding the advertisement stems from what it omits. According to the Associated Press, the ad does not mention that Acton's now-deceased stepfather was charged with raping her as a child. He subsequently failed to appear in court and was declared a fugitive. Acton and her other were removed from their mother's custody, while the mother continued to live with the stepfather.
Critics have condemned the ad as an unethical and distasteful tactic, arguing that it exploits a painful family history for political gain. The ad has drawn criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans.
Trump's lashing out at the reporter for asking about the ad has shifted some of the focus from the ad's content to his own behavior. His history of berating and insulting journalists who ask critical questions has been a recurring theme throughout his political career.
