NASA has begun barring Chinese nationals with valid visas from participating in its programs, citing security concerns amid the intensifying space race between rival powers.
The policy shift underscores growing tensions as both nations compete for lunar dominance.
Previously, Chinese nationals could contribute as contractors, graduate students, or university scientists, though not as staff However, on September 5th, several individuals were suddenly locked out of IT systems and barred from in-person meetings.
NASA press secretary Bethany Stevens confirmed the agency has restricted physical and cybersecurity access to facilities, materials, and networks.
The move comes as the US Artemis program targets a 2027 Moon landing while China aims for 2030. NASA’s acting administrator Sean Duffy emphasized America’s determination to lead in space, stating “The Chinese want to get back to the Moon before us. That’s not going to happen”. This policy change reflects escalating competition in the new space race.
