Doctors Without Borders announced that following the enforcement of mandatory burqa wearing for women in Herat province, their visits to the organization’s hospitals have significantly decreased. This new restriction, which began on November 5th, has further limited women’s access to essential healthcare services.

According to the organization’s report, women’s hospital visits dropped by 28 percent between November 5th and 7th. The Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice instructed women not to leave their homes without wearing a burqa.

This sudden decision represents another restriction on Afghan women’s participation in daily life. The Taliban group has imposed severe limitations on all aspects of women’s and girls’ lives since regaining control of Afghanistan in August 2021.
