Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesperson, told Iran’s state broadcaster that Afghanistan has two official languages, Dari and Pashto, both holding equal status for the group.
He explained that Pashto is primarily used in Pashtun provinces while Dari is used in Persian-speaking areas for education and administration.
Mujahid emphasized that the Taliban group has no biased view toward any language and considers both official languages part of Afghan people’s shared identity.
These statements come amid recent controversy over removing Uzbek language from Jawzjan University’s signboard, sparking widespread reactions.
Critics say removing Uzbek from the university sign contradicts the province’s linguistic composition and represents denial of identity for many residents.
This action conflicts with Taliban claims about equal value of languages and raises concerns about limiting non-official languages, especially Uzbek and Turkmen.
