The International Committee of the Red Cross has warned that AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot are generating entirely fake research papers and sources.
The organization cautioned users to be careful when relying on information provided by these systems, as they often create non-existent articles, journals, or archives.
According to the Red Cross, these AI tools do not actually research or verify their references, but instead generate content based on patterns.
This means they can invent catalogue numbers and descriptions for documents or platforms that never existed, misleading users with plausible but false details.
The Red Cross advises people to search for original sources themselves and double-check any information from AI bots, especially when it comes to important research or historical documents.
