Donald Trump told the New York Post that he is considering recognizing Somaliland as an independent nation. Speaking from Florida, he remarked that he is “looking at it,” following a similar official recognition by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday.

The discussion intensified after Somaliland’s president offered land for a US military base on the Red Sea. Netanyahu declared the recognition consistent with the Abraham Accords, acknowledging the region which unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991.

While Somaliland has functioned independently for decades, it remains unrecognized by most of the international community. A shift in US policy, combined with Israel’s stance, could significantly alter the geopolitical landscape of the Horn of Africa.
