On Sunday, the Taliban publicly flogged a man and a woman in the Darqad district of Takhar province. The Supreme Court announced that the pair received 25 lashes each and were sentenced to one year in prison for “illicit relations and running away from home.”
New data reveals a sharp increase in corporal punishment over the last three months, with at least 318 people flogged across various provinces. Statistics show a 47% rise in such punishments this month alone compared to the previous one, with Kabul and Khost also seeing high numbers.
International human rights organizations have condemned these acts as cruel and inhumane, calling for an immediate halt. Despite this, the Taliban continue to implement these sentences, citing their interpretation of Sharia law as justification.
