Residents of Nawzad district in Helmand are sounding the alarm over a high number of children suffering from cleft lip and palate conditions. Impoverished families report they cannot afford surgery, and many infants are suffering from malnutrition due to difficulties in breastfeeding.
One father shared his despair, stating, “My child can’t nurse, and I can’t afford formula. No one is helping us.” Compounding the crisis, seasonal diseases are claiming lives, while local clinics lack resources and merely issue referral letters that poor families cannot use.
The suspension of foreign medical aid has led to the closure of many rural health centers. The health situation in Nawzad is critical, and residents are urgently appealing to aid organizations and the government to intervene and save their children’s lives.
