Local officials in Helmand province have reported the excavation of several tanks dating back to the Soviet invasion era. Hafiz Abdul Bari Rashid, the provincial Director of Information and Culture, stated that the tanks were dug up by security forces on Sunday after being buried for years.
According to officials, these military vehicles were destroyed during the early years of the Soviet war and were later buried by American forces. The unearthing of these heavy machines serves as a stark reminder of the decades of conflict that have scarred the landscape of southern Afghanistan.
It remains unclear what the authorities plan to do with the recovered wreckage. Helmand has been the site of some of the fiercest battles in Afghanistan’s history, leaving behind vast amounts of military scrap and remnants from various foreign interventions.
