Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, has stated that Afghan citizens are among those killed and detained in the recent protests in Iran. He emphasized that the victims include ordinary civilians and children from diverse backgrounds .
Noting that approximately five million Afghans live in Iran, Bennett expressed concern over their safety. The UN has called on Iranian authorities to halt the execution of detainees and to provide a transparent account of the casualty numbers .
Conflicting reports regarding the death toll persist; while Iranian officials claim around 3,117 deaths, human rights organizations estimate the number of those killed in the protests to be over 7,000 .
