Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in Afghanistan, marked International Women’s Day by declaring that the Taliban’s system of gender discrimination is unparalleled in the modern world, entirely rooted in the exclusion and suppression of women.
Bennett emphasized that over the past four years, the Taliban has institutionalized a regime of segregation designed solely to dominate women and girls. He noted that Afghan women do not seek symbolic sympathy; rather, they demand equal human rights, dignity, and a firm stance from the international community against these violations.
Praising the incredible courage of Afghan women running underground schools and healthcare networks, Bennett urged global donors to increase funding for women-led organizations. He warned that any engagement with the Taliban must remain strictly principled.
