Recent data reveals that Afghan asylum seekers remain the largest group receiving protection in the European Union. Despite a general decrease in granted asylums, Afghans accounted for 27 percent of all successful applications in member states last year.

According to Eurostat, over 361,000 asylum requests were approved across the EU in 2025. Germany led the bloc by granting the highest number of protections, followed closely by Spain and France. Citizens of Venezuela, Syria, and Ukraine trailed behind Afghans in the statistics.

While subsidiary protection status saw a massive decline, Afghan applicants continued to experience the highest acceptance rates during both initial and appeal stages. This trend highlights the ongoing humanitarian need for displaced Afghans seeking refuge.
