Reporters Without Borders stated that Afghanistan holds the 175th position out of 180 countries in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index. This ranking confirms the nation remains one of the most dangerous places globally for independent journalism and free expression.

Despite a marginal score improvement, the situation for media workers under the Taliban administration has not changed. The organization noted the media landscape lacks diversity, forcing outlets to publish controlled information. Consequently, a massive number of journalists have abandoned their profession entirely.

Female journalists suffered the most, with eight out of ten leaving the media sector due to severe restrictions. Economic hardships and strict new content laws have led to widespread self censorship, while four reporters currently remain in detention centers.
