Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, has urged the Taliban government to immediately release detained journalists ahead of World Press Freedom Day. He highlighted that media freedom in the country continues to deteriorate severely.
Bennett noted that independent reporting faces immense challenges due to censorship and strict regulations under the Taliban government. He stated that at least four journalists are currently imprisoned, creating a widespread atmosphere of fear and self-censorship among media workers.
Warning about the extreme difficulties faced by female journalists in particular, Bennett called on the international community to provide greater financial and technical support. He emphasized that a free and independent media remains absolutely essential for the future of Afghanistan.
