The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has stated that developing the cotton industry could serve as a highly sustainable economic alternative to poppy cultivation in Afghanistan. The organization strongly supports promoting legal trade opportunities.
To advance this initiative, a delegation of Afghan businessmen recently traveled to Uzbekistan, supported by the UN and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. They engaged in productive discussions with Uzbek officials regarding cotton processing and increasing export volumes.
A Japanese representative emphasized that Uzbekistan's expertise can help Afghan farmers secure a stable income. Enhancing the cotton value chain will play a crucial role in reducing drug reliance and fostering rural economic stability.
