Pakistani officials have reported that the closure of borders with Afghanistan has inflicted over 1.4 billion dollars in losses on their foreign trade. The severe economic impact was recently presented in a detailed parliamentary committee report.
Trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan has nearly halted since the border crossings were closed in October. More than 7,500 containers are currently stranded at various ports, severely disrupting the export of essential goods like medicine, food, and machinery.
The border instability with the Taliban administration and rising tensions in the Persian Gulf continue to threaten regional commerce. In response, the Pakistani government is actively seeking alternative transit routes, including increased reliance on Iranian paths to reach Central Asian markets.
