A federal court in New York has sentenced Najibullah, a former Taliban commander, to forty-two years in prison. He was convicted for his direct involvement in kidnapping an American journalist and causing the deaths of three US soldiers.
The kidnapping incident occurred in two thousand eight when David Rohde was held hostage in a tribal region for seven months. Najibullah confessed to providing material support and weapons used against American troops in Afghanistan.
The federal judge stated that she avoided a life sentence because of his guilty plea and the harsh prison conditions during the pandemic. The fifty-year-old commander officially apologized to the journalist's family during the court hearing.
