Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has urged all parties to exercise restraint regarding planned protests in Herat province. This appeal follows reports of an increased security presence by the Taliban administration across various parts of the city.

Local residents have indicated that fresh protests might occur after recent detentions of women over dress code violations. However, there are widespread concerns that massive security deployments could prevent these peaceful demonstrations and lead to further escalation.

The United Nations previously confirmed the death of an eleven-year-old Afghan boy during recent clashes in the same area. International human rights experts continue to demand an independent investigation and emphasize the fundamental right to peaceful assembly.
