UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett has strongly criticized the invitation of Taliban representatives to Brussels. He stated that discussing the deportation of Afghan migrants with the group is a profound insult to Afghans, particularly to women, and undermines international human rights principles.
Backing the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Bennett expressed deep concern over the forced return of asylum seekers from European countries. He emphasized that refugee laws must be respected and that no Afghan should ever be sent back to face unsafe and dangerous conditions.
This criticism comes as the European Commission adopts new regulations for the rapid deportation of migrants. The planned meetings between European officials and the Taliban have raised massive alarms among human rights organizations, who fear this could legitimize the current regime.
