Freedom of speech is one of the most important foundations of a healthy and developed society. It means that people can express their opinions, criticism, ideas, and views without fear of prison, threats, or punishment.
In a society where freedom of speech exists, people can identify problems and help find solutions. But in a society where people are afraid to speak, mistakes remain hidden and problems continue to grow.
For example, if drinking water in a city is contaminated and people are not allowed to talk about it, illness can spread. But if the media and citizens are free to raise the issue, officials are more likely to take action and solve the problem.
Freedom of speech is like a mirror that reflects the reality of society. Some realities may be unpleasant, but hiding them does not make them disappear. An illness cannot be cured by ignoring it. It must first be recognized before it can be treated.
Countries such as Sweden, Canada, and Germany are among those where freedom of speech is widely respected. Because of this, people can criticize the government, journalists can report freely, and officials can be held accountable for their mistakes. This has helped improve governance and contributed to the progress of these countries.
In contrast, many authoritarian governments try to silence critics. They believe that by suppressing voices they can hide problems. History has shown the opposite. Silencing people does not solve problems. It often leads to greater dissatisfaction, corruption, and distrust.
Freedom of speech does not mean that people have the right to insult others or spread hatred. An insult means humiliating, abusing, disrespecting, or attacking a person’s character. For example, if someone responds to an opinion by using offensive language against the person instead of discussing the idea, that is not freedom of speech. It is an insult.
Hate speech occurs when a person or group encourages hostility, discrimination, or violence against others. For example, if someone encourages hatred toward a particular ethnic group, religion, language, or social group, that is hate speech. Such behavior does not unite society. Instead, it creates division, mistrust, and hostility among people.
Freedom of speech should allow people to criticize beliefs, policies, governments, and social problems. However, criticism should be based on facts, logic, and respect, not on insults and hatred.
Afghanistan also needs freedom of speech. People should be able to speak openly about the country’s economic, social, educational, and political challenges. No society can find the path to progress without listening to the voices of its people.
A healthy society is one where people can think freely, ask questions, express criticism, and share their opinions. Truth is discovered through discussion and the exchange of ideas, not by silencing voices.
Freedom of speech is not an enemy of society. It is one of the most important tools for reform, progress, and justice in any country.
