Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has called for an independent investigation into the spike in migrant deaths inside US detention centers. He strongly criticized the lack of transparency regarding these tragic incidents.
According to official data, at least nineteen migrants have died in these facilities since the beginning of this year. Human rights groups attribute these fatalities to systemic neglect, inhumane living conditions, and abusive treatment within the detention network.
Türk emphasized that the perpetrators must be held accountable and the families deserve absolute justice. He also expressed grave concerns over the excessive use of solitary confinement, warning that it significantly increases the risk of suicide among highly vulnerable migrants.
