The World Health Organization has officially announced that four new cases of the poliovirus were registered in Afghanistan during the past week.
According to the organization's report, these new cases were identified in Nangarhar, Helmand, and Herat provinces. With these recent infections, the total number of polio cases in the country for the year 2026 has unfortunately increased to eleven.
Furthermore, twelve positive environmental samples of the poliovirus have been detected across various parts of Afghanistan. This alarming situation has raised serious concerns about the further spread of the disease and the severe threat it poses to the health of Afghan children.
