Today marks the 19th anniversary of the death of Mohammad Zahir Shah, the last King of Afghanistan. He passed away on July 23, 2007, at the age of 92 and was buried on Maranjan Hill in Kabul.
Zahir Shah ruled for 40 years and spent nearly 30 years in exile. During his reign, he kept Afghanistan neutral throughout World War II and the Cold War, maintaining a delicate balance between major global powers.
His era was marked by economic reforms, a new constitution, and educational opportunities for women. Following the fall of the first Taliban regime, he returned to Kabul, where the Loya Jirga granted him the title "Father of the Nation."
