Georgette Gagnon, UNAMA's acting head, once again called on Taliban authorities to lift restrictions on girls' education and allow them to return to schooling at all levels. During a visit to Istalif district in Kabul province, she toured a girls' primary school and met with local Taliban officials and community elders.
Gagnon also visited a computer lab established with UN support at the school and stressed the importance of girls' access to digital skills and information technology. She emphasized that girls must be able to continue their education and contribute to Afghanistan's development.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have banned girls above grade six from school, and in December 2022 barred women from universities. According to UNESCO, over 2.5 million Afghan girls are denied education, a number projected to exceed four million by 2030.
