Denmark's UN ambassador and current Security Council president described the fifth anniversary of the Taliban's return to power as "a very bitter anniversary." She announced the council will focus in August on the consequences of five years of Taliban rule, especially for women and girls.
Kristina Markus Lassen said at a UN press conference that Denmark has consistently emphasized international law and the "women, peace and security" agenda. Since the Taliban's return on August 15, 2021, sweeping restrictions have been imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan.
Girls have been barred from education beyond sixth grade and women excluded from universities. The UN has repeatedly called for these restrictions to be lifted and warned of the long-term consequences for Afghanistan's future.
