Reuters reported that the US State Department has notified Congress of its decision to close five diplomatic missions abroad. The targeted missions are in Grenada, Nagoya in Japan, Medan in Indonesia, Douala in Cameroon, and Winnipeg in Canada.
The move is part of the Trump administration's government downsizing agenda aligned with its "America First" policy. The State Department had begun reviewing the closure of nearly 12 missions last year, while the White House budget office had proposed shutting up to 30.
Democrats and former foreign policy officials have warned that reducing America's diplomatic presence, combined with the dismantling of USAID, could weaken US global leadership and create space for China and Russia to expand their influence. The State Department has not confirmed the closures but says it remains focused on maintaining an effective diplomatic network.
