The World Health Organization reported that 15 confirmed polio cases have been recorded in Afghanistan since the start of 2026, with environmental samples also reaching 53. Afghanistan currently has the highest polio infection rate in the world.

Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only two countries in the world where polio has not been eradicated. Pakistan has recorded three human cases and 108 environmental samples since the beginning of 2026.

Last year, Afghanistan registered 21 human cases and 94 environmental samples, while Pakistan recorded 31 human cases and 651 environmental samples.
