Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, serving as UN Special Envoy for Global Education, published an article in The Guardian calling for a global fund to support Afghan girls at risk of forced marriage. The piece was published as the fifth anniversary of the Taliban's return to power approaches.
Brown wrote that the Taliban has continuously intensified the suppression of women and girls through "successive retaliatory decrees," while the international community has failed to respond effectively. He also referenced Taliban forces firing on women's rights protesters in Herat in June.
The UN envoy stressed that education is the most powerful tool against early marriage and proposed a global fund to provide scholarships enabling Afghan girls to study from outside Afghanistan.
