More than 50 prominent international human rights and legal experts have jointly issued a declaration calling for gender apartheid to be recognized as a crime under international law, timed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Taliban's return to power.
The declaration, set to be unveiled on August 13 at the University of Michigan Law School, is the result of 18 months of consultations between international lawyers and Afghan women's rights defenders. Signatories include Nobel Prize laureates, former international court judges, and former UN officials.
The signatories urge the international community to explicitly include a ban on gender apartheid in the Convention on Crimes Against Humanity and hold perpetrators accountable. They also criticized efforts by some actors to normalize relations with the Taliban.
