The Norwegian government announced on Thursday that it has allocated 580 million Norwegian kroner, equivalent to approximately $60 million, for mine clearance and assistance to landmine victims in Afghanistan and five other countries — Colombia, Lebanon, Myanmar, Syria, and Yemen.
Norway's Foreign Minister warned of the long-term dangers of landmines and unexploded war ordnance, stressing the need for clearance after conflicts end. The funding will be distributed among five international organizations active in mine action and will be spent over the next four years.
Afghanistan remains one of the world's most mine-contaminated countries. According to UN figures, around 3.3 million people in Afghanistan live near mine-contaminated areas, and on average about 50 people are killed or injured every month from unexploded ordnance.
