Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban's Interior Minister, said at the 107th Afghan Independence Day ceremony that all Afghans accept August 19 as Independence Day, but no one accepts August 15 — the anniversary of the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.
Haqqani suggested that perhaps in the future, after the current generation is gone, people may also commemorate August 15. He claimed that with the consolidation of Taliban rule, Afghans now have national unity.
The Interior Minister stressed that independence is not merely the commemoration of a historical event — it is only complete when a generation is educated with sufficient medical, technical, and professional skills to meet Afghanistan's needs and free the country from dependence on others.
